History of Pickleball
Pickleball was invented in 1965 when Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell found their families bored one afternoon. They tried to set up a badminton game but couldn’t find the shuttlecock, so they challenged the kids to make up their own game. They used a badminton court and tried different balls and paddles, eventually lowering the net to make it easier to play. After some trial and error, they found that a Cosom Fun Ball and plywood paddles worked best.
In 1967, the first outdoor pickleball court was built at a friend’s house. By 1968, Pritchard and others formed Pickle Ball, Inc., which made paddles and kits to meet growing demand. The game spread, especially as “snowbirds” took it to warmer states like Arizona and Florida.
In 1976, the first pickleball tournament was held in Washington, and the U.S. Amateur Pickleball Association (now USA Pickleball) was formed in 1984. The sport grew rapidly across the U.S., and by 1990, it was played in all 50 states.
Today, pickleball has exploded in popularity. The U.S. Pickleball National Championships have been held in California since 2018, and the U.S. Open Pickleball Championships started in Florida in 2016. As of 2022, there are over 8,000 pickleball locations in the U.S., and participation continues to grow, with more than 8.9 million people playing in 2022.

As pickleball grows, injuries have become more common, especially involving muscles and joints. However, advocates highlight its benefits, including exercise and social connections for people of all ages.
