Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting recently talked about how he would tackle India’s star fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, who is currently regarded as the best all-format fast bowler in the world. The 30-year-old right-arm fast bowler dominates the Australian batting lineup in the 1st Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He was named player of the match in Perth for his outstanding bowling. After seeing the struggle of Aussie batters against Bumrah, Ponting shares his plans to counter the 30-year-old.

Ponting’s Approach to Bumrah
Speaking on the ICC Review, Ricky Ponting shared his thoughts on facing a bowler like Bumrah. He joked about charging down the pitch to hit him back over his head but explained his real strategy:
“I’d charge him every ball, I’d run down the wicket, I’d hit him back over his head. That’s very much a joke, but I’d try to be proactive and put pressure back on the bowler. I’d be reacting to the ball, but I’d be trying to score. Like I said, the reason that he’s so good is because he doesn’t let you score. The flip side of the best bowlers not letting you score is that the best batsmen don’t allow bowlers to bowl that way. That’s the way I would approach it as well.”
Ponting further said, “I can put my hand up and ask people to sit back and watch and say that in T20 cricket, one-day cricket and Test match cricket, he’s clearly the best right now. It’s not all about wickets. It’s about performing at a high level for a long period of time. We saw the other day when he gets the right conditions, just how good he can be.”

Bumrah has been phenomenal in the 1st Test as a player and as a captain also. India started the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 with a crucial win and is aiming to continue the momentum. Rohit Sharma has joined the team and will lead the team in the 2nd Test, which is going to be the pink-ball Test starting on December 6.
