The ongoing five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) between Australia and India is the biggest clash of the year. The matches of the series will be played from November 22 to January 07. To stay in the race for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, the Indian team will have to win four matches in this series. On the other hand, Australia is looking to stop India from clinching the series for the straight 5th time. Therefore, there will be a huge responsibility on the senior players from both teams.

Some senior players from both teams might take their retirement from test cricket after the BGT, and it might be their last Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series.

Rohit Sharma (India)

The Indian cricket team captain, Rohit Sharma, this Border-Gavaskar Trophy could well be his last. With the next tour slated to take place after 2 long years, the Hitman will likely continue to play for India by then. In 2027, Rohit Sharma would be 39 years old. Currently, the ace batter has been under the scanner for his poor performances. The opener failed to stitch together good scores in the recently concluded Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand.

We might not see him in the next test series between Australia and India in 2027.

Ravichandran Ashwin (India)

It might be the last BGT for the all-rounder and right-arm off-breaker Ravichandran Ashwin. Looking back to his tremendous performance over the year, he is also a top wicket-taker player in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He is standing in the 2nd position of the top wicket-taker in the BGT. Let’s check out his stats in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the BGT, Ashwin has around 114 wickets in 22 matches with an average of 28.36. He has played 22 matches till now. He has been a part of the team since 2011 and has most made over earned in the BGT. Ravichandran Ashwin’s best bowling figure is 7/103.

Ashwin is currently 38 years old, and India surely has talented youngsters to replace the spot of Ravi Ashwin; Washington Sundar might be the next look from the Indian cricket team to replace one of the best spinners of India. Ashwin would be ready to say goodbye to the BGT after this series.

Steve Smith

Australian right-handed ace batter Steve Smith will also seem to retire after this Border-Gavaskar Trophy; currently, he is 35 years old and can well possibly play his last BGT in 2024-25. Let’s have a look at the stats of Steve Smith, who played 18 tests where he scored 1887 runs with an average of 65.06. Steven Smith has been playing since 2013; he has 8 centuries and 5 half-centuries in tests against India so far. He is also a top run scorer in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Steve Smith likes to play against India; he looks very comfortable with Indian bowling as he played with an average of 65.05. But this might be the last BGT for him.

Nathan Lyon

Another game-changer from the Australian team, 36-year-old Nathan Lyon regarded as one of the best spinners in recent times, however, this could be his last test series. Let’s check out his stats in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Nathan Lyon is the most wicket-taker in the history of BGT. He is at the top of the list with 26 matches till now and has taken 116 wickets with an average of 32.40. Nathan Lyon has an 187 maiden over and has the best bowling figure of 8/50. He joined the Australian team in 2011 for the BGT.

This might be the last test series of his career; he will be giving a chance to the youngsters as he is taking retirement from the test series format.

Ravindra Jadeja (India)

He is already having the retirement from the T20Is, and this might be the last Border Gavaskar Trophy test series for him. We might get to see him retiring soon from the red ball carrier, as he is aged 35 now.  It is still a long haul to consider that he would be in the scheme of things in February of 2027 when Australia would tour India. Jadeja is one of the players who has the most number of wickets in the BGT. Let’s check his stats in BGT over the years. He has 85 wickets in just 16 matches with an average of 18.85. He secured 5th position in the list of most wicket-takers in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. He has bowled 176 maiden overs with the best bowling figure of 7/42. He joined the team back in 2013.

We might not see him again in BGT, as he is likely to retire before the next IND vs. AUS test series.
